The results are in for Soil Week Australia’s successful Healthy Soil Competition for 2023. The topic is “Wonderful Worms.”

The competition attracted over 180 entries from schools and students from diverse rural and urban areas from all States in Australia. The entries showcased the creative talent of our students and teachers and it was a pleasure for the judges to view all the entries. Congratulations to everyone for the effort and enthusiasm.

Congratulations to all primary and secondary school entrants, and a special thank you to the wonderful teachers, who encourage their students to explore nature and their student’s creativity.

Schools Competition Terms and Conditions

By entering the Soil Week Australia competition, you agree to the following terms and conditions.

1. Competition Organiser: The organiser of this Competition is Soil Week Australia, as an initiative of Healthy Soils Australia Inc (ABN 76 174 890 102) 145 Burke Street. Dubbo NSW 2830.

2. The competition is free to enter.

3. Participants and schools must register to enter the competition.

4. Who can enter the competition? Categories of the competition are as follows:

Kindergartens and Pre Schools

  • Prep/ Kinder
  • Grade 1/2
  • Grade 2/3
  • Grade 3 /4
  • Grade 5 /6
  • Secondary Students 7 & 8
  • Secondary Students 9 & 10

Home Schools Students. Same categories/levels as schools

Specialist Schools

5. If a student is under the age of 18 at the time of registration, the teacher or the parent or guardian must authorise the entry to the competition and agree to the terms and conditions. Available on the website.

6. Soil Week Australia reserves the right at any time to make its own independent enquiries to verify the eligibility of Participants and to disqualify any Participant who does not meet the eligibility criteria. Each Participant authorises Soil Week Australia to make enquiries of, and obtain information from, the relevant primary school and secondary school at which the winner is enrolled, their parent/guardian to verify the information provided by Participants. All Soil Week Australia’s decisions about the eligibility of Participants will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

7. Competition Theme: The theme of the competition is Healthy Soil, Healthy Food.

8. The competition timelines are:

  • 7th April 2025  –  Competition opens for registration.
  • 12th October 2025 – Final date for projects to be uploaded onto soil week website.
  • On or before 12th November 2025  –  Winners notified.
  • 1st week in December 2025  –  Press release of winners.

9. How to Enter: To enter the competition each school or Participant must complete a registration form. The competition is free to enter. Registration for the competition commences 9.00 am 7th April 2025. At registration the school or the participant will be required to complete the registration form and consent forms as required.

10. Completed projects must be sent to Soil Week via Google docs, or as attachment to email.

11. A participant may submit more than one entry.

12. Entries which are considered by Soil Week Australia to be offensive or otherwise inappropriate, or unlawful will be deemed invalid and will be excluded from the Competition. Entries that are wholly AI generated will not be considered. Entries not submitted during the Competition Period or not completed in accordance with these Terms and Conditions will not be valid entries and will not be eligible to win.

13. A Participant’s entry may not be entered, or have been entered, in any other competition.

14. Project Format. The project must be in digital format and can be in any form but must address the topic. It can be a play, an essay, infographic or video or any other format.

15. Prize details

  • Each Kindergarten and Primary category have a prize Winner $500 voucher to the school, Second Prize $100 voucher to the school.
  • Secondary Students Winner $200 JB HiFi voucher to the student, Second prize $100 JB HiFi Voucher to the student.
  • Home School students each category. $50 JB HiFi voucher to the student.
  • Specialist school. Winner $500 Voucher to the school.
  • The Calvin Muller Prize for a special entry. $500 Voucher to the school.
  • There are other prize categories to be determined. Some prizes will be available to specific geographic areas.
  • There is also $50 special “shout out” prizes to schools and students.
  • Total available approx. $3000.00.
  • Each student participating will receive a certificate.

16. General criteria for the projects assessment will be included on the website.
17. The entries will be evaluated through a two-step judging process: A representative of Soil Week Australia will review all entries and disqualify any entries which do not comply with the Terms and Conditions. The representatives will then assess all valid entries and select a shortlist of no less than ten entries for consideration by the judging panel. The judging panel will select the winner/s.

18. The winners will be notified by phone and by follow up email and if possible, presentation of the prize in person.

19. The judging panel will select the next best entries in the event the original selection is not suitable or unable to collect their prize.

20. The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

21. The submissions of the winning participant and school will be displayed on the Soil Week Australia website, Facebook and Instagram. Entrants will be asked for permission before this occurs. Other participants and schools may be approached for permission to display other works considered interesting or relevant to the theme for Soil Week.

22. Announcement and notification of the winners will be on or as close to 12th November 2025 and be published on the Soil Week Australia website on 30th November 2024.

23. Each entry remains the property of the Participant who submits it.

24. Each entry must be the original work of the Participant or school group submitting the entry and must not be copied from any other person’s work. By submitting an entry, each Participant warrants that their entry is their original work, and they have not copied it from any other person’s work. If an entry uses text from someone else’s work, that use must be with the consent of the owner of the work and must attribute the author. Projects completed using a majority of Artificial Intelligence will not be deemed students work.

25. By submitting an entry, each Participant warrants that s/he has complied with this requirement.

26. By entering the Competition, the winning Participant consents and grants a non-exclusive, royalty-free, one year licence to Soil Week Australia using, communicating or publishing their entry for one year without remuneration. This will be in conjunction with the winner and the school and is to promote the Soil Week event only. The permission of the school will be sought for any publication.

27. By entering the Competition, each Participant is deemed to have expressly consented in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and all other applicable privacy legislation to the collection, storage, disclosure and use of their personal information in the manner and for the purposes identified in these Terms and Conditions. Soil Week Australia will not use any data without the permission of the school and student/s.

28. Each Participant acknowledges and agrees that Soil Week Australia may, in order to conduct the Competition and for related purposes, collect, store and use personal information collected from or in relation to Participants. Personal information will not be disclosed without the express permission of the participant or school. Personal information disclosure is only relevant for the winning entries. Any personal information received will be handled in a matter that is compliant with the Australian Privacy Principles. Please read our privacy policy.
